Ramaphosa re-elected as President of South Africa

The new Government of National Unity is a combination of Mr Ramaphosa’s ANC, the centre-right Democratic Alliance and other smaller parties. Mr Ramaphosa, 71, won a decisive victory in a parliamentary vote against a surprise candidate, Julius Malema, leader of the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters party. Mr Ramaphosa received 283 votes to Malema’s 44 in the 400-member house. Cyril Ramaphosa secured his second term after he struck a crucial deal with his most bitter political rival, the Democratic Alliance party, just hours before the vote for president, after the ANC lost its 30-year majority in the African National Assembly. In last month’s elections, the African National Congress’ vote share fell to 40%, while the Democratic Alliance emerged as the second-largest party with 22% of the vote. The parties will now co-govern South Africa, the first national coalition in which no party has a majority.
