"Water Bomb Against India": BJP MP On China Building World's Largest Dam

Guwahati: China’s statement of constructing the world’s largest dam was like a ‘water bomb’ which would have a disastrous downstream impact on northeastern India and Bangladesh, BJP Lok Sabha member from Arunachal Pradesh Tapir Gao stated here on Tuesday. The congressman from Arunachal Pradesh was addressing a seminar on ‘Ensuring Water Security, ecological integrity and Disaster Resilience in the Sub-Himalayan Region: The Case of the Brahmaputra’.

China has already made the decision to build a dam that can generate 60,000 megawatts of electricity. Mr. Gao declared, "This will be a water bomb, not a dam, to be used against India and other lower riparian countries.

"He asserted that a similar "water bomb" was responsible for the devastating floods in June 2000, which destroyed over ten bridges on the Siang River—the Yarlung Tsangpo in Arunachal Pradesh before it changed its name to the Brahmaputra when it entered Assam. "Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bangladesh, and other Southeast Asian countries will be devastated if China decides to release water from the dam in the future," he added.
