Supreme Court pulls up Allahabad high court's observation that rape ‘victim invited trouble’

An Allahabad high court ruling that claimed the rape victim "herself invited trouble" was criticized by the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The bench led by Justice BR Gavai deemed the remarks to be extremely offensive.
Days after the Supreme Court stepped in to overturn a "insensitive" ruling made by another high court justice in a rape attempt case, the Allahabad high court issued a contentious ruling granting bail to a rape suspect, stating that the complainant "herself invited trouble" by consenting to visit the applicant's home after drinking.
According to the ruling issued by Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh last month, the woman "was competent enough to understand the morality and significance of her act" because she is an MA student. "Bail can be given, yes, but what is this conversation about her inviting problems, etc.? Saying such things requires caution, particularly from this side (judges). Justice BR Gavai was quoted by Bar and Bench as saying, "One thing here and there."
