Over the next few months, Google will eventually be rerouting country-specific domain names to its main domain, google.com, as a result of improvements made to the search engine's "local experience." In a blog post on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Google stated, "Historically, we've used country code top-level domain names (ccTLD) as part of our process to provide localized results, such as google.ng for Nigeria or google.com.br for Brazil."

But "over the years, our ability to provide a local experience has improved," the business noted, adding that because Google has been offering customized results since 2017, having country-level domains is no longer required. Additionally, Google stated that users may be asked to re-enter some of their search choices throughout the gradual rollout of the change over the upcoming months.

Although this update will alter the address bar that users see in their browser, it won't have an impact on how Search functions or how Google complies with legal requirements in other countries.
