The US state department has cautioned that students who try to break US laws may be subject to repercussions, including deportation. US Department of State spokesperson Margaret MacLeod told PTI in a virtual interview that the Trump administration was strictly implementing immigration rules, such as the Alien Registration Act and the Immigration and Nationality Act.

"America provides opportunity as long as you abide by the law. However, those who break the law will be held accountable," MacLeod said to PTI Videos in response to a query about the problems Indian students in US colleges experience. As authorities revoke F-1 visas for a variety of reasons, from involvement in pro-Palestinian demonstrations to minor legal violations, Indian students in the US face an increasing risk of deportation.

"We are aware that several Indian students have received communication from the US government regarding their F-1 visa status, which happens to be the student visa," said Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs, during his weekly news briefing on Thursday. We are investigating the situation. The students are receiving assistance from our embassy and consulates.
