Kolkata: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has chosen to travel to the Murshidabad district, which is experiencing communal violence, on Thursday evening, defying Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's earlier-in-the-day pleas to hold off on visiting the area until the situation there completely stabilizes.

The Governor will only be departing for Murshidabad on Thursday evening, according to insiders from Raj Bhavan in Kolkata. After arriving, he would spend the night at the District Circuit House before touring the various neighborhoods in this predominantly minority district, which had been tense for nearly a week following violent protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

The Chief Minister urged the Governor not to travel to Murshidabad for the time being earlier on Thursday, via representatives of the media. "I would ask the Governor to hold off on visiting Murshidabad for a few more days. I had the option to go there. However, since my visit will inspire others to go, I choose not to. Additionally, a group from the West Bengal Commission for Women was interested in visiting. However, earlier in the day, the Chief Minister said, "I asked them to wait for a few more days."
