NEW DELHI In what could portend more trouble for "India's Got Latent" host Samay Raina, the Supreme Court announced on Monday that it would hear a petition alleging that he mocked the disabled, including a person with visual impairment and those suffering from a rare condition like as Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
A panel of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh, citing the gravity of the situation, directed senior attorney Aprajita Singh, who was representing NGO Cure SMA Foundation of India, to submit a formal petition rather than an interim intervention plea in the pending case of influencer and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia. "This is a major situation. You file a writ petition. We'll see what can be done. The bench warned Singh that writ jurisdiction had a broader reach.
The bench also took note of Allahbadia's assertions that the investigation was over and said it would consider a request for the restoration of his passport on April 28 in a case involving his offensive remarks on Raina's show. On February 18, the Supreme Court shielded Allahbadia from arrest in numerous FIRs filed over his statements on a YouTube show and ordered him to surrender his passport to the investigating officer of Police Station Nodal Cyber Police, Thane.
