Doctors share tips to communicate with Alzheimer’s patients even when words fail

It can be difficult to communicate with a loved one who has Alzheimer's. Their words may fade, yet they can still feel. Neha Sinha, Dementia Specialist, CEO, and Co-Founder of Epoch Elder Care, noted that "the most important thing in such situations is not necessarily what we communicate but how we relate."
Communication problems while caring for elderly people with dementia can cause irritation and bewilderment, which can quickly escalate into worry and agitation, therefore compassionate and clear communication is crucial. Always say yes rather than reminding or correcting them; it is vital to enter their world and remain patient.
He said, "There will be several repetitions; try not to become irritated. Please be as patient and reassuring as possible. Calm Agitation down by gently talking about how upsetting it must be for the person who has difficulty with memory. Finally, the foundation of any communication is respect, which must be conveyed."
