Live updates on Trump's tariff announcement: At an event in the White House Rose Garden today at 4 p.m. (local time), US President Donald Trump is scheduled to declare reciprocal tariffs against foreign nations. According to the Trump administration, the action is intended to discourage nations from imposing unjust taxes on foreign goods and to relieve America of its reliance on them.
Trump declared that the tariff would take effect immediately and named the April 2 announcement "Liberation Day." US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated last month that the Trump administration targeted the "Dirty 15," or the 15 percent of nations who have the highest tariffs and the largest trading volumes with the US.
According to him, these countries frequently have laws pertaining to food safety or native content that work together to prevent American goods from entering their marketplaces. Although the specifics of Trump's tariffs are still unclear and no formal list has been released, a US Census Bureau report identifies a number of nations that rank among Washington's top trading partners in terms of bilateral goods trade in 2024.
