Stock market opens lower after Donald Trump's reciprocal tariff bombshell

On Thursday, April 3, the stock market started the day's trading session lower following the release of US President Donald Trump's much awaited reciprocal tariff plan. Thursday's biggest stock declines were in IT, telecom, and real estate. The benchmark BSE Sensex was down 499.45 points, or 0.65%, at 9.15 am, closing at 76,117.99. The wider NSE Nifty began trading at 23,207.10, down 125.25 points, or 0.54%.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump declared from the White House that India would be subject to reciprocal duties of 26%. Tata Motors opened at ₹656.05. This was the biggest drop of the 30 Sensex equities, down 2.34 percent. Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone, which was down 2.22 percent, trading at ₹1170, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, which was down 2.25 percent, trading at ₹2,106.05, came next.
Tata Motors, on the other hand, was up 0.74 percent at ₹676.40, the second-highest gain since yesterday's opening. Out of the Sensex stocks, only three were up. The Midsmall IT and Telecom Index experienced the most decline of any Nifty sectors index, dropping 1.94 percent to 9,055.90. Next in line were Nifty IT, which fell 1.67 percent to 35,676.45, and Nifty Realty, which fell 1.47 percent to 842.10.
