Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday said that the early arrival of the southwest monsoon and heavy rainfall in a very short period of time was to be blamed for the inundation of several areas in Mumbai.
Several locations, such as Nariman Point, Ward Municipal Head Office, Colaba Pumping Station, and Colaba Fire Station recorded rain in excess of 200 mm from Sunday night to Monday morning, resulting in heavy inundation of streets and roads, throwing normal life out of gear.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde reviewed the rain situation in Thane on Monday. Assuring citizens that comprehensive measures were taken to avoid any casualties, Shinde said that Thane received 135 millimetres of rain during the day.
At least five people who were trapped in excess water following heavy rain in Mumbai have been rescued from the Kharghar hills.
The incident took place on the hill behind the Kharghar Golf Course. Five people from Sion Koliwada had gone for a walk in the hills. However, the young men got stuck as the flow of the waterfall increased due to heavy rain.
The fire department personnel of Kharghar rescued the five young men and took them safely with the help of ropes.
