Following a tragic incident in Thane district where four passengers lost their lives and six others were injured after falling from an overcrowded moving local train, the Railway Ministry has announced a major safety upgrade for Mumbai’s suburban rail network.

On Monday, June 9, 2025, senior Railway Board official Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity, confirmed that the Ministry has decided to equip all existing and upcoming local train coaches in the Mumbai Suburban system with automatic door closure mechanisms.

This decision comes in response to growing concerns over passenger safety, particularly during peak hours when overcrowding is at its worst. Kumar stated that the move will apply to all trains currently under manufacturing, ensuring that newer rakes will come with built-in safety systems to prevent passengers from falling off while boarding or alighting.

The implementation of automatic doors is expected to be a crucial step toward reducing fatalities and injuries on one of the busiest suburban railway networks in the world, which transports millions of commuters daily.
