Explore 9 New Game Templates Included in UE5.6 Release

Last week’s Unreal Fest was packed with exciting announcements, including the first glimpse of The Witcher 4 and the official release of Unreal Engine 5.6. This update brings enhancements to animation tools, mobile development, MetaHuman Creator, and more.
One of the biggest changes in UE 5.6 is the overhaul of its game templates, making it easier and faster to start new projects. Templates have been streamlined to reduce download sizes while adding more features. A new feature called Variants allows developers to customize templates for specific gameplay styles—whether it’s a side-scrolling platformer, an open-world racing game, or a top-down strategy game. Variants provide a focused starting point tailored to your project.
Kartoon Develop Tips released a quick 5-minute video summarizing all nine new templates in UE 5.6, including arena shooter, combat system, horror, vehicle, and more, designed to kickstart a variety of game genres.
To try them out, open Unreal Engine 5.6, go to the Games section in the project browser, and select a base template like First Person, Third Person, Top Down, or Vehicle. Then choose one of the Variants from the dropdown menu.
