Ex-BCCI Selector Names Ideal Kohli Replacement — Not Gill or Sudharsan

Former BCCI selector Saba Karim has backed KL Rahul as the “ideal” replacement for Virat Kohli at the No. 4 position in India’s Test batting lineup. Kohli stepped away from the game ahead of the England Test series, sparking discussions about who would fill the crucial middle-order spot. In an interview with NDTV, Karim expressed confidence in Rahul’s ability to step into the role and deliver.
“In Kohli’s absence, Rahul’s role becomes monumental. I see him as the perfect fit at number four,” Karim said. “There have been various suggestions about who should bat there, but KL has both the technique and the temperament for that position. He can stabilize the innings if there’s an early loss and also anchor it going forward.”
Karim highlighted Rahul’s maturity and experience as key strengths. “He’s grown a lot over the past season and a half. He’s shown maturity and adaptability, especially in overseas conditions like England. He’s also played county cricket, which gives him an edge.”
However, Karim acknowledged the challenge of filling Kohli’s shoes. “It won’t be easy. The game has evolved — the pace, the strategies, everything is different now. But if KL gets the support he needs from team management, he can truly make this opportunity count.”
He further pointed out that Rahul’s experience in domestic cricket and recent practice matches should help him prepare for the responsibility. “If he stays focused and in form, he can be a valuable asset — not just as a temporary replacement but as a long-term contributor.”
Karim concluded by saying both Rahul and another Bengaluru-based player (possibly referring to Mayank Agarwal or Devdutt Padikkal) could play key roles in shaping India’s success in the upcoming series.
