Vedanta Ltd., the mining conglomerate owned by Anil Agarwal, has announced its first interim dividend of ₹7 per share for the financial year, following the conclusion of its board meeting on Wednesday, June 18. This move will result in a total cash outflow of approximately ₹2,737 crore for the company.
With Vedanta Resources holding a 56.38% stake in Vedanta Ltd., it is poised to receive ₹1,543 crore from this dividend declaration.
The record date for the interim dividend payout has been fixed as June 24, 2025. This means that shareholders on record as of that date will be eligible for the dividend.
Interestingly, the dividend decision comes on the same day Vedanta sold 1.6% of Hindustan Zinc’s equity, generating ₹3,023 crore in proceeds. Vedanta Ltd. currently owns 64.92% in Hindustan Zinc, which itself recently declared a ₹10 per share interim dividend, earning Vedanta close to ₹3,000 crore.
Historical Dividend Trends
Vedanta has been consistent with high dividend payouts. In FY2025, the company paid a total dividend of ₹43.5 per share, amounting to ₹17,000 crore in total distributions to shareholders. Over the last four years, Vedanta has cumulatively paid over ₹200 per share in dividends.
Shareholding & Analyst Outlook
Vedanta has a wide retail investor base, with nearly 20 lakh retail shareholders (those with holdings under ₹2 lakh), collectively owning 11.25% of the company as of the March 2025 quarter.
Despite its generous dividend history, JPMorgan had noted in a May 1, 2025, report that the company’s dividend payout is likely to halve in FY2026 to ₹25 per share, and stay stable at ₹27 per share in FY2027.
Market Response
On the trading front, Vedanta’s stock showed signs of recovery after the announcement, trimming earlier losses and trading 0.3% lower at ₹457.65 in afternoon deals.
The dividend move and strategic stake sale reflect Vedanta’s ongoing efforts to manage cash flow and balance sheet strength amid evolving market conditions.
