JP Criticizes Mamata Govt Over Muslim-Owned Shops Preparing Digha Jagannath Temple Prasad

Since its inauguration in April, the replica of Odisha's Jagannath Temple constructed by the West Bengal government in Digha has been at the centre of multiple controversies. The latest dispute involves the preparation of prasad distributed at the temple.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led state government of assigning the task of preparing temple prasad to Muslim-owned shops. BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya alleged that this move disregards Hindu religious sentiments.

On June 17, Malviya took to social media platform X, posting a list of sweet shops and ration dealers — reportedly based in Suti 1 Block of Murshidabad district — that he claimed were mostly Muslim-owned and involved in preparing sweets like Gaja and Pera, distributed as offerings at the temple.

“This is not just administrative carelessness; it’s a deliberate provocation. The Mamata government is trampling on Hindu sentiments with impunity,” Malviya said.

The incident has sparked sharp political reactions, with the BJP demanding a review of the decision and calling for more sensitivity in matters involving religious practices.
