Pakistan has officially nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, crediting his "decisive diplomatic intervention" during the recent India-Pakistan military flare-up.
The escalation, which lasted four days and followed a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir that killed 26 people, ended in a ceasefire reportedly mediated with Trump's help.
The Pakistan government made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“The Government of Pakistan has decided to formally recommend President Donald J. Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of his decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis.”
The nomination came shortly after a rare White House meeting between Trump and Pakistan’s Army Chief, Asim Munir, now holding the title of Field Marshal. Munir reportedly joined Trump for lunch, though the specifics of the discussion were not made public.
According to reports from Geo News and Dawn, Pakistan’s military establishment considers this meeting a diplomatic breakthrough, with Munir having earlier advocated for Trump’s Nobel bid, crediting him with defusing a potential nuclear standoff between the two South Asian nations.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly confirmed that the meeting was arranged after Munir publicly praised Trump's role in maintaining regional peace.
