Aadhaar Now Mandatory for New PAN Cards from July 1, 2025
In a major shift toward a fully digital tax system, the Indian government has announced that Aadhaar will be mandatory for anyone applying for a new PAN card starting July 1, 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) stated that only Aadhaar will be accepted for verification—scrapping the earlier provision of using multiple identity documents.
This move aims to:
Curb tax evasion
Eliminate fake or duplicate PAN cards
Simplify the application process using biometric authentication
While this boosts accountability, it also makes Aadhaar essential for all financial and tax-related tasks.
Existing PAN holders must link their PAN with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025. Failure to do so will render the PAN inoperative, affecting bank transactions, investments, and more.
This marks a significant step in India's digital governance and tax compliance transformation.
