Warren Buffett Donates $6 Billion in Berkshire Shares to Five Foundations

Renowned investor Warren Buffett has announced a $6 billion donation in Berkshire Hathaway stock to five foundations, pushing his total philanthropic contributions since 2006 to approximately $60 billion based on share value at the time of donation.

The nearly 12.4 million Class B shares will be transferred Monday, with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust receiving the largest portion—9.4 million shares. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation will get 943,384 shares, while the Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and NoVo Foundation will each receive 660,366 shares.

Buffett noted last year that posthumous donations to the Gates Foundation would cease, with his three children entrusted to manage the remainder of his wealth.

Berkshire Hathaway, which owns major brands like Geico and Dairy Queen, has seen its Class B shares rise by 19.1% over the past year—outpacing the broader U.S. market’s 14.1% gain.

Buffett attributed his wealth not to extraordinary events but to “a very long runway, simple and generally sound decisions, the American tailwind and compounding effects.”
