Trump Imposes New Tariffs: 40% on Myanmar, Laos | Full List

US President Donald Trump has announced a fresh round of tariffs targeting 14 countries, with duties as high as 40% on Myanmar and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. These new trade measures will take effect starting August 1, as part of Trump’s broader agenda to recalibrate global trade dynamics.
In official letters addressed to the leaders of the affected nations and shared via Truth Social, Trump warned of consequences for any retaliatory measures:
“If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by will be added onto the tariffs that we charge.”
Trump argued that these tariffs are necessary to counter “years of unfair tariff and non-tariff policies” and to tackle the "unsustainable trade deficits" harming the US economy and national security.
Markets and businesses are expressing concerns about increasing unpredictability, as shifting tariff rules complicate decisions around production, hiring, inventory, and pricing.
Japan and South Korea were the first to be named, with 25% tariffs each. When questioned about the choices, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said simply, “Those are the countries he chose.” She added that several new trade deals are nearing finalisation.
New Trump Tariffs by Country (Effective August 1):
Country Tariff Rate
Myanmar 40%
Lao People's Democratic Republic 40%
Cambodia 36%
Thailand 36%
Bangladesh 35%

Indonesia 32%
South Africa 30%
Bosnia and Herzegovina 30%
Japan 25%
South Korea 25%
Malaysia 25%
Kazakhstan 25%

The White House confirmed these are the first in a “wave of letters” as Trump’s administration moves forward with its assertive trade agenda.
