Farmers Protest Land Survey for Shaktipeeth Expressway Project

A major protest erupted on Monday as scores of farmers in Uttar Pradesh demonstrated against the ongoing land survey being conducted for the proposed Shaktipeeth Expressway, a major infrastructure project aimed at connecting key religious sites across the state. The expressway, planned to boost tourism and improve road connectivity between Shaktipeeth temples, has run into stiff resistance from local villagers who fear displacement, loss of livelihood, and inadequate compensation.
The protests took place in several villages falling under the proposed route, particularly in districts like Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, and Farrukhabad, where survey teams were reportedly stopped by agitated locals. Holding placards and shouting slogans, farmers demanded that the government first hold comprehensive consultations before proceeding with any land acquisition.
Farmers allege that they were not informed in advance about the expressway’s alignment or the survey operations. “We are not against development, but this expressway will cut through our fertile land. We have not been taken into confidence, and the process lacks transparency,” said Ram Pratap Yadav, a farmer from Shahjahanpur. He added that farming is the sole source of livelihood for many, and losing land would mean economic ruin.
Many farmers also raised concerns about compensation. Past experiences with land acquisition have left villagers sceptical of government promises. “The government talks of fair compensation, but in reality, farmers are left to struggle for years. We need a proper rehabilitation plan, legal clarity, and assurance of long-term support,” said Sunita Devi, a woman farmer participating in the protest.
The situation escalated in parts of Badaun and Farrukhabad, where clashes between police and protestors were reported. While no serious injuries were confirmed, the administration has now deployed additional security forces to avoid further unrest.
