Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, marks the beginning of the Hijri New Year and holds immense spiritual importance. In 2025, Muharram began in India on Friday, June 27, following the sighting of the crescent moon on June 26, confirmed by the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, will be observed on Sunday, July 6, 2025. As a gazetted holiday, all government offices, schools, banks, and stock exchanges, including BSE and NSE, will remain closed.

Why Muharram Is Significant in Islam

Muharram is considered the second holiest month in Islam after Ramadan. It holds deep religious and historical significance for both Shia and Sunni Muslims:

Shia Muslims mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. His sacrifice for justice is remembered through mourning rituals.

Sunni Muslims mark Ashura with fasting, prayers, and charity, believing several key events—including the parting of the Red Sea for Prophet Moses—occurred on this day.

Observance in India

In India, Muharram is commemorated with solemnity:

Shia communities hold majlis (religious gatherings), recite marsiyas (elegies), and participate in processions.

Acts of symbolic mourning, such as self-flagellation, are practiced to express grief and solidarity with Imam Hussain’s suffering.

Sunni Muslims mainly observe the day through fasting and offering prayers.

Security Measures for Muharram 2025

Due to the scale of public gatherings, several states have implemented strict security measures:

In Uttar Pradesh, especially Sambhal, over 900 individuals have been placed under preventive restrictions.

DGP Rajeev Krishna has directed police to ban new procession routes, restrict weapon displays, and enforce CCTV and drone surveillance to maintain peace.

No permissions will be granted for unapproved practices or routes during Muharram.

Final Note

Ashura 2025, falling on Sunday, July 6, will be observed across India as a day of remembrance, sacrifice, and faith. It serves as a powerful reminder of the values of justice, resilience, and devotion in the face of adversity.
