Akash Deep Shines with Historic 10-Wicket Haul at Edgbaston, Dedicates Feat to Sister Battling Cancer

Akash Deep, the young pacer from Bihar, delivered a sensational performance in India’s second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, grabbing headlines with a 10-wicket match haul.

In the first innings, while Mohammed Siraj dominated with six wickets, Akash played a crucial role, picking up four. He followed it up with a spectacular five-wicket haul in the second innings, playing a key part in India’s massive 336-run win — their first-ever Test victory at this venue.

Emotional Tribute to His Sister

Following the match, an emotional Akash Deep opened up in a post-match interview, revealing he had dedicated the performance to his elder sister, who has been fighting cancer for the past two months.

"I haven’t shared this before, but my elder sister has been battling cancer. She is stable now. I hope this performance brings a smile to her face. Every time I held the ball, I thought of her," he said.

Outshining Bumrah and Entering the Record Books

Stepping in as a replacement for the rested Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep stunned everyone with his composure and effectiveness. With match figures of 10 for 187 in 41.4 overs, he not only surpassed Bumrah’s best in England (9 for 110 at Nottingham in 2021), but also became only the second Indian to claim a 10-wicket haul in a Test match on English soil — the first being Chetan Sharma at Birmingham in 1986.

What makes Akash’s feat even more remarkable is the nature of the pitch — a batting-friendly surface that saw over 1700 runs scored across both innings.

Most Wickets by an Indian in a Test Match in England:

Akash Deep – 10 for 187 (Birmingham, 2025)

Chetan Sharma – 10 for 188 (Birmingham, 1986)

Jasprit Bumrah – 9 for 110 (Nottingham, 2021)

Zaheer Khan – 9 for 134 (Nottingham, 2007)

BS Chandrasekhar – 8 for 114 (The Oval, 1971)

Akash Deep’s breakout performance has not only secured a significant victory for India but also written his name into the annals of Indian cricket history.
