Trump Tariffs: Govt tells Tharoor panel US ties key, trade just one part

The government has told a parliamentary panel led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor that India’s relationship with the United States goes beyond trade and should not be defined solely by tariff disputes. Briefing the committee in the backdrop of new tariff measures announced by former US President Donald Trump, officials stressed that strategic, defence, and technological cooperation remain central to bilateral ties. While acknowledging that trade is an important component of the partnership, the government underlined that it is only one aspect of a broader relationship. The statement comes amid concerns that heightened tariffs could impact certain Indian exports, prompting calls for careful diplomatic engagement to balance economic interests with long-term strategic priorities.
