The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a new international scholarship programme named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Called the Chevening UP Atal Scholarship, it will provide talented students from the state a chance to pursue higher studies in the United Kingdom with full financial support.
Designed for academically outstanding students, the scheme covers nearly all expenses including tuition fees, exam charges, accommodation, food, and annual travel between India and the UK. Officials estimate the sponsorship cost at ₹45–48 lakh per student. In its first phase, five students have been selected to pursue their master’s degrees in England.
The initiative is a result of a partnership between the Uttar Pradesh government and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The agreement was signed at CM Yogi Adityanath’s residence in Lucknow, where he highlighted that the programme will prepare UP’s youth for global leadership roles. The scheme will initially run for three years.
Under the funding model, 50% of the cost will be borne by the UP government, while the remaining will be covered by the FCDO. British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron praised the collaboration, calling it a step towards strengthening India–UK educational ties.
