Maharashtra has rolled out a major green initiative, allowing electric vehicles (EVs) toll-free access on the Atal Setu. Effective from Friday, this move supports the state’s sustainable transport goals under the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy. Both private and government-owned electric four-wheelers can avail the exemption, with plans to extend it to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Samruddhi Expressway.

The toll relief is part of a wider strategy to cut carbon emissions and boost clean mobility. While electric cars and buses enjoy toll-free travel on key routes, EVs on other highways managed by the Public Works Department receive a 50% discount. Exemptions cover private electric cars, passenger vehicles, state transport buses, and urban public transport EVs, though goods carriers remain excluded.

Mumbai alone has registered over 22,400 EVs, including 18,400 light four-wheelers and 2,500 passenger vehicles. With around 60,000 vehicles using the Atal Setu daily, this initiative is expected to ease costs for EV owners while encouraging more citizens to switch to electric mobility. By offering such incentives, Maharashtra is strengthening its commitment to sustainable transport and leading the way toward a cleaner, greener future.
