On August 3, 2025, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a letter to Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, requesting details of his EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card) number. The move follows Yadav’s allegation that his name was missing from Bihar’s draft electoral roll, which was published on August 1.

Responding swiftly, the ECI dismissed the claim as “baseless,” and released an extract of the draft roll showing that Yadav's name was indeed included. However, the twist lies in a mismatch of EPIC numbers. The number quoted by Yadav reportedly differs from the one listed in the draft roll by the Commission, sparking confusion over the authenticity and update status of his voter ID records.

The ECI clarified that no political party, including Yadav’s own Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), has filed any formal claims or objections regarding the draft roll so far.

The discrepancy has raised concerns over the accuracy of voter data ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in Bihar. The Commission has asked Yadav to furnish his EPIC details for further verification and resolution.
