In Talaimannar, northern Sri Lanka, up to 47 Indian fishermen were detained and their five trawlers were seized on Thursday on suspicion of engaging in illicit fishing in the waters of the island nation, according to the Navy in Colombo. Coordinated patrols in the Mannar and Delft marine areas resulted in the arrests. For additional action, the 47 detained fishermen and their gear will be turned over to the northern fisheries inspectorate.

Navy spokesman Commander Buddika Sampath told PTI that the Naval command operation to apprehend them started late last night and continued into the wee hours of Thursday. With Lankan Navy officers even shooting at Indian fisherman in the Palk Strait and confiscating their boats in multiple reported instances of illegally entering Sri Lankan territorial waters, the fishermen's issue continues to be a sensitive one in the bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka.

Twelve Indian fisherman were detained and their boat confiscated last month in the northern Sri Lankan city of Jaffna.
