Real-time updates on Cyclone Shakhti: According to officials on Saturday, "Shakhti" has grown into a powerful cyclonic storm that is churning up the sea and packing gusts of up to 100 kmph. According to the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones' convention, Sri Lanka has proposed the name "Shakhti" for the cyclonic storm, which is apparently the first of the Arabian Sea's post-monsoon season.
The weather service told PTI that as of Saturday morning, the cyclonic storm was centered about 420 kilometers from Dwarka in Gujarat and was heading deeper into the Arabian Sea. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), "Shakthi" is expected to move west-southwest and arrive in the northwest and adjacent west-central Arabian Sea by Sunday. "Shakthi" would subsequently recurve and move east-northeastward starting Monday morning, before gradually weakening, the IMD added.
Sea conditions along and off the Gujarat-North Maharashtra coast will become rough to extremely severe as the cyclonic storm moves forward, and they will stay that way until Sunday. Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg are among the Maharashtra districts for which the IMD has issued a warning. A high to moderate cyclone warning has been issued by the weather service for October 3–7.
