Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, named the team on Saturday for the forthcoming three-match series against Australia, which starts in Perth on October 19. Rohit Sharma was replaced as the next ODI captain by Shubman Gill. Since the present team administration wants the 26-year-old to captain India in the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, Gill was chosen to replace Rohit. Gill is now the vice-captain in T20Is and the skipper in both Tests and ODIs.

To choose the team for the Australia tour, the selection committee met on Saturday under the direction of Ajit Agarkar. Before deciding to switch the captain, the selectors also informed head coach Gautam Gambhir. Following Rohit's retirement from the format earlier this year, Gill assumed the role of Test captain.
