Ajit Agarkar, the top selector for the BCCI, confirmed a leadership change ahead of the team's 2027 ODI World Cup preparations on Saturday, reinforcing Indian cricket's transition into a new age. The board announced Shubman Gill as Rohit Sharma's replacement, ending Sharma's stellar tenure as ODI skipper. Beginning on October 19, Gill's first assignment will be the three-match series in Australia.

Although Agarkar acknowledged that Rohit was notified of the decision, he did not provide any other information regarding the nature of the discussion, leaving it up to conjecture. The Telegraph reported, however, that "Rohit had been informed about the decision some time ago and not on Saturday."

Agarkar was really asked how Rohit responded to the decision when it was explained to him during the press conference for the announcement of the white-ball squads for the Australia trip, but the former India fast bowler said nothing. He continued: "That is a conversation between me and Rohit, but like I said, of course, it has been communicated to him."
