Majoti Sahil Mohamed Hussein, a 22-year-old Indian who turned himself in to the Ukrainian forces while fighting alongside the Russian military, was a resident of Morbi town and had traveled to Moscow for more education, the Gujarat Police stated on Wednesday. According to reports, Hussein joined the Russian military in order to escape a jail term in a drug-related case. In order to get to the Ukrainian border, he joined the Russian army, not to engage in combat, but to surrender as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, the Ukrainian Army's 63rd Mechanized Brigade posted a video of the Indian national on its Telegram account, claiming that he had turned himself in to them on the battlefield. The ministry of external affairs has not yet released an official statement. On condition of anonymity, people with knowledge of the situation had stated that the Indian embassy in Kyiv was checking the accuracy of the report.

At their home in Morbi, Hussein's mother, meanwhile, declined to give reporters any information. Apparently wanting privacy, she closed the house and departed for an unidentified place.
