Shocking Kanpur Attack Leaves Law Student Critically Injured

A 22-year-old law student was brutally attacked in Kanpur after a dispute at a local pharmacy over the price of medicine, leaving him with a split abdomen and two fingers severed, police said. The victim, identified as Abhijeet Singh Chandel, a first-year LLB student at Kanpur University, was assaulted with a cleaver and suffered multiple injuries before being rushed to Regency Hospital for emergency surgery. Doctors stitched up head wounds and carried out a two-hour operation to treat his abdominal injuries.

Police say the incident began when Chandel argued with the shop owner, Amar Singh Chauhan, over the cost of medication. Chauhan, his brother Vijay Singh and two associates allegedly attacked the student; three suspects have been arrested on charges of attempted murder while one person remains at large. Local residents intervened to help the bleeding student, and family members tied his exposed intestines with a cloth before he was taken to hospital.

The victim’s mother has alleged that the accused are “well connected with police” and claimed that an extortion case was filed against her son the same night — a move she said was intended to shield the attackers. Police officials, however, have said the three arrested individuals are booked on attempt-to-murder charges and a fresh case was registered after the attack. The family’s allegation that a false extortion complaint was lodged has added a worrying layer to the case and prompted calls for an impartial investigation.
