Kerala launches CM’s Gold Cup for State School Sports; cup contains 940.24g of 22-carat gold and govt plans to construct houses for 50 gold-winning students from poor families.

Government to Build Houses for 50 Gold Medal-Winning Students
Kerala has unveiled the Chief Minister’s Gold Cup for the upcoming State School Sports Meet, a move that marries sporting excellence with social welfare by promising homes for top-performing students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Gold Cup itself is symbolic — it contains 940.24 grams of 22-carat BIS-916 hallmarked gold and will be awarded to the district that wins the overall championship.
In a separate but linked announcement, Kerala’s General Education Minister V. Sivankutty said the state will construct houses for 50 meritorious students who won gold medals at the Kerala School Olympics but come from economically weaker families. The department has already identified beneficiaries such as Devapriya from Idukki and Devananda from Kozhikode, with local organisations — including the CPI(M) Idukki District Committee and Kerala Scouts and Guides — stepping forward to sponsor individual houses.
The Education Department is inviting individuals, NGOs and organisations to partner in the housing drive, saying the response so far has been encouraging. Officials described the initiative as part of a broader effort to recognise student talent while addressing immediate needs like safe housing, which can directly affect a child’s ability to continue schooling and training. This links the State School Sports Meet more closely to community development and student welfare.
