Google lays off hundreds of employees in Android, Pixel, and Chrome teams: Report
Hundreds of workers were let go by Google on Thursday from the platforms and devices division, which develops the Chrome browser, Pixel smartphones, and Android software. According to a story by The Information, this cut follows the tech giant's January buyout offers to unit employees.
"Since combining the Platforms and Devices teams last year, we’ve focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively and this included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January," a representative for Google was quoted as saying in the paper.
This also follows Google's February layoffs in its cloud division, which the company said only a few teams were impacted by, according to a Bloomberg article. According to the article, Google disclosed intentions to lay off up to 12,000 employees in January 2023, or 6% of its global workforce.
