Online speculations claim that President Donald Trump may declare martial law after enforcing the 1807 Insurrection Act. By claiming that "America's sovereignty is under attack," Trump may use this act to deploy troops to the southern border and give them orders to assist law enforcement in implementing domestic laws.

The defense and homeland security secretaries were instructed by Trump to submit a joint report on the situation at the southern border within ninety days. The report also included recommendations for "additional actions that may be necessary to obtain complete operational control of the southern border, including whether to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807."
