Today's Sensex and Nifty: Concerns about Trump's April 2 tariffs cause stock markets to plummet

On Tuesday, April 1, the first day of the new fiscal year, the stock market fell into the red as the week's trading session got underway. Stocks in metals, financial services, and IT fell the most. At 9.15 am, the benchmark BSE Sensex was trading at 76,842.77, down 572.15 points, or 0.74 percent. At 23,394.00, the wider NSE Nifty opened 125.35 points down, or 0.53% lower.

The Sensex has dropped 868.54 points, or 1.12%, by 10:45 a.m., to 76,546.38. It saw a quick 1,000-point decline, plunging to 76,415.69. In the meantime, the Nifty dropped 183.10 points, or 0.78 percent, to 23,336.25. It was 23,276.10 at its lowest. India is one of the nations that is anticipated to be severely impacted by US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs, which go into effect on April 2.

When the market opened, Infosys was down 2.25 percent, trading at ₹1,535.10, the most of the 30 Sensex equities. Next in line were Bajaj Finance, which was down 1.66 percent, trading at ₹8,800, and NTPC, which was down 1.82 percent, trading at ₹351.15. When it opened last Friday, Infosys had also dropped the most, down 0.54% to ₹1,594.95. Because it was Eid-ul-Fitr, Monday was a market holiday.
