Layoffs in Las Vegas: MGM Resorts cuts concierge staff, Americans fear economic downturn

MGM Resorts International, one of the largest hospitality corporations on the Las Vegas Strip, is discontinuing in-person concierge services at the majority of its Strip locations. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, MGM Resorts stated Saturday that concierge desks at the MGM Grand, Park MGM, The Signature at MGM Grand, New York-New York, Mandalay Bay, and Vdara would be closed.

The shutdown will take effect on Monday, according to an email from a corporate spokesman. Concierge services at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino, Aria Resort & Casino, and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will continue. MGM Resorts also operates the Luxor, which will discontinue its concierge service in 2023. MGM Resorts announced that 34 people will lose their employment as a result of the layoffs. They will be accommodated in other roles or given transitional support.

For decades, concierge desks have been a staple of high-end hotels. Guests can use the service to schedule excursions, vehicle rentals, restaurant reservations, and other activities. The phase-out of this service from big Las Vegas resorts has sparked concerns about an economic slump. On social media, some people linked the layoffs in Las Vegas to luxury casinos charging exorbitant costs, resulting in fewer customers. Las Vegas is famed for its bustling nightlife, world-class casinos, and luxurious hotels.
