Google Gemini Now Auto-Summarizes Your Gmail Emails
Google continues to enhance Gmail with AI-powered features, making it easier for users to manage their inboxes. After introducing Gemini last year to generate summaries of individual emails or long threads, the company has now taken it a step further.
As of May 29, Google announced that Gmail will begin displaying automatic summaries at the top of email threads where helpful — particularly in lengthy conversations or messages with multiple replies. This update removes the need to tap the “Summarize this email” button, streamlining the experience for users on the go.
Gemini-generated summaries will dynamically update as the email thread evolves, keeping users informed of the latest developments. Currently, this feature is available only in English and is rolling out gradually on Android and iOS Gmail apps. It’s also exclusive to Google Workspace users, Google One AI Premium subscribers, and those on Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium plans.
This upgrade is part of Google’s broader May Workspace feature drop, which also includes Gemini-powered summaries in Google Chat’s Home view, a new summary block in Google Docs, and interactive Mind Maps in NotebookLM — helping users visualize how ideas connect and evolve.
