Indian-Origin Democrat Zohran Mamdani Wins New York Mayoral Primary
Zohran Mamdani Defeats Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Primary, Makes History
Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Muslim and self-described democratic socialist, has won the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo in a stunning political upset.
According to the latest trends, Mamdani secured 43.5% of the vote, while Cuomo trailed with 36.3%. Mamdani thanked supporters with a post on X (formerly Twitter), quoting Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done… My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it.”
Mamdani is the son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan-born Indian scholar Mahmood Mamdani. His campaign struck a chord with young voters, emphasizing affordability, justice, and inclusion. Using sharp social media outreach and grassroots organizing, Mamdani's platform reflected the values of the Democratic Socialists of America, who backed him.
The primary saw over a dozen Democratic candidates vying for control of America’s largest city. Voters turned out despite a heatwave, and final counts are still being verified.
Cuomo, once a political heavyweight, stepped down as governor in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations and criticism over his handling of the COVID-19 crisis. While he maintained high name recognition and centrist support—including endorsements from figures like Bill Clinton—his past controversies appeared to sway voters.
Mamdani’s victory marks a historic shift in New York politics, showcasing the growing power of progressive grassroots movements in major urban centers.
