Google: Minimum Age to Go Live on YouTube Set to 16 From July 22
In response to rising cybercrime and to strengthen child safety, YouTube is updating its livestreaming policy. Starting July 22, 2025, users must be at least 16 years old to go live independently on the platform. Previously, the minimum age was 13.
This change is part of YouTube’s broader efforts to protect minors online. Teenagers under 16 will only be allowed to appear in livestreams if accompanied by an adult on camera. In cases where this condition isn’t met, YouTube may disable the live chat feature or remove the stream entirely. For minors who still want to host livestreams, a parent or adult must be set as a channel manager and be visibly present throughout the session via YouTube’s Live Control Room.
This updated rule aligns with YouTube's ongoing child safety features, including Supervised Accounts, Made for Kids content categorization, and enhanced chat moderation tools. It also follows Google’s initiative to use AI-based systems to verify user age and reduce exposure of children to inappropriate content.
While the new policy may impact young creators who rely on livestreaming for growth and interaction, YouTube emphasizes that child safety remains the top priority. The company aims to strike a balance between creative freedom and responsible digital practices.
