Gukesh Responds to Carlsen's Outburst After Loss: "Also Banged..."
India’s teen chess sensation and reigning World Champion, D Gukesh, pulled off a dramatic turnaround victory against former World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 of the ongoing Norway Chess 2025 tournament. It marked Gukesh’s first classical win over the Norwegian grandmaster and only the second time an Indian has defeated Carlsen at this event, following R Praggnanandhaa’s feat.
Speaking to Chess.com after the intense match, Gukesh admitted the win wasn’t as satisfying as it could have been, saying, “I mean, [it was] not the way I wanted it to be, but okay, I will take it.”
The 19-year-old showed maturity beyond his years in his response to Carlsen’s visible frustration post-match. A video from Norway Chess shows Carlsen banging the table and knocking over pieces after the loss — a rare emotional moment. Yet Gukesh responded sportingly, saying, “I have also banged a lot of tables in my career,” showing understanding for the heat of the moment.
Gukesh had been trailing for most of the game and admitted, “99 out of 100 times I would lose,” calling it a “lucky day.” But his resilience paid off, as he capitalized on Carlsen’s late-game nerves to turn the tide. The win propelled Gukesh to third in the points table with 8.5 points, just behind Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana.
Their encounter in Round 1 had gone the other way, with Carlsen defeating Gukesh in a fierce battle. That match marked Carlsen’s return to classical chess after nearly a year and was their first face-off since Gukesh claimed the world title.
Gukesh’s coach, Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna, praised the young star’s grit: “He was dead lost for so long, yet he kept kicking. He didn’t expect to win, but I’m sure he’s happy.”
With such performances, Gukesh continues to affirm his status as one of the most exciting players in the chess world toda
