BCCI Not Responsible for RCB Stampede: IPL Chairman Says
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal responded firmly to the tragic stampede that occurred outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during Royal Challengers BRCB celebratedengaluru's (RCB) IPL 2025 title celebrations, stating that the BCCI cannot be held responsible.
The post-victory celebration turned deadly as massive crowds gathered outside the stadium, overwhelming security arrangements. The stampede led to the deaths of at least 11 people and injured nearly 50. While the chaos unfolded outside, the event continued inside the packed stadium as RCB celebrated their first-ever IPL title win, ending an 18-year wait.
Dhumal expressed his condolences, saying, “It is sad and tragic. The celebrations turned into a tragedy. Our heartfelt condolences go to the families who lost their loved ones. But the BCCI had no role in organizing the event. For us, the IPL concluded last night. How can we be held responsible for something we had no control over?”
He emphasized that no IPL or BCCI officials were involved in the planning or crowd management at the event. “Have you seen any IPL officials at the gates managing crowds or facilitating players' entry?” he asked.
Upon hearing of the tragedy, Dhumal said he immediately contacted RCB officials. “They informed me that they were inside the stadium and unaware of the situation outside. After our conversation, they decided to call off the event,” he added.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also addressed the incident, acknowledging possible lapses. “There were some failures. The BCCI had no role in it. But it’s a lesson for the future. We’ll consider creating new rules for such celebrations,” he said.
