Bumrah skips celebration after breaking Kapil's record; Siraj cheers him
Jasprit Bumrah delivered a sensational performance on Day 2 of the third Test against England at Lord’s, taking 5/74 and surpassing Kapil Dev’s record for the most five-wicket hauls by an Indian away from home. However, true to his calm persona, Bumrah chose not to celebrate the milestone.
Returning to the playing XI after being rested for the second Test at Edgbaston, Bumrah was in top form, tearing through England's middle and lower order. He sealed his 15th five-wicket haul—and 13th overseas—by clean bowling Jofra Archer with a peach that nipped in sharply and crashed into the stumps. This feat pushed him past Kapil Dev’s previous record of 12 overseas five-wicket hauls.
The ace pacer’s incredible spell helped India bowl England out for 387, after the hosts had resumed at 251/4. While Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse resisted with fighting half-centuries, Bumrah’s early spell in the morning session set the tone. He had already taken four wickets before lunch, underlining why he’s currently ranked the No. 1 bowler in the world.
Despite etching his name on the Lord’s Honours Board, Bumrah didn’t indulge in any wild celebration. He even hesitated to raise the ball in acknowledgement—a traditional gesture made iconic by the likes of Glenn McGrath.
Sensing the moment, Mohammed Siraj stepped in, lifting Bumrah’s hand for the crowd, prompting a loud round of applause from the Lord’s faithful. It was a humble reminder that for Bumrah, the team’s success matters more than personal milestones.
