Delhi Woman's Grateful Uber Post Wins Internet Hearts

A Reddit post by a Delhi-based woman has delighted the internet, all thanks to her experience with an Uber cab driver who chose empathy over convenience.

Sharing her story on the 'r/delhi' subreddit under the title "God bless that Uber Guy", she recalled how she mistakenly entered her office address instead of her home while booking a cab after a short post office visit with colleagues.

The Uber came within a minute, I shared the OTP, and the ride began," she wrote. But 100 metres into the ride, she realised the error and asked the driver if she could update the destination. The driver declined, explaining it was in the opposite direction of where he needed to go.

She decided to cancel the ride, but what unsettled her wasn't the minor inconvenience. It was the fact that she was stranded on a poorly lit main road in the rain. She described the area as "spooky" and "unsafe".

Sensing her concern, the driver told her, "Ma'am, aap doosri cab kar lo. Jab tak na ho, aap car mein hi baithe raho. Aise raat mein road pe kahaan aap akele khade rahoge. Accha nahi lagta aise (Ma'am, you can book another cab. Until it arrives, please stay inside the car. It's late at night, and standing alone in the middle of the road doesn't feel right."

The driver explained that he was unwell and hadn't eaten all day, which is why he couldn't take a longer route. Still, he waited with her inside the car until her second ride arrived, and ensured she got into it safely before leaving.

The whole time till I reached home and even now, I think about how a small gesture can make somebody feel safe and secure," she wrote. "Hope that he's doing well now."
