"Ex-S.Korean President Yoon challenges arrest legality in court"

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Challenges Legality of Arrest

Seoul, July 16 – Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has formally petitioned the court to review the legality of his arrest, his legal team announced on Wednesday. The request, submitted to the Seoul Central District Court, argues that Yoon’s detention was both "illegal" and "unjust" in substance and procedure.

Yoon has been held at the Seoul Detention Center since last Thursday after a court issued a warrant for his arrest over charges linked to an alleged attempt to impose martial law during his presidency. The petition could potentially lead to his release, depending on the court's decision.

This is not the first time Yoon has taken such legal action. In January, after a previous arrest, he similarly filed a request challenging his detention. While the court initially ruled the arrest legal, it later accepted his appeal and granted him release in March.

Meanwhile, a special counsel team, led by prosecutor Cho Eun-suk, made another attempt on Tuesday to interrogate Yoon regarding his alleged martial law plan. The team requested that the Seoul Detention Center transfer Yoon to the interrogation room by 2 p.m. However, Yoon has repeatedly refused to comply with summonses from the investigators since his second arrest.

The case continues to unfold as Yoon maintains his stance against cooperating with the special counsel’s inquiry.
