Ukraine claims gains in Sumy; says Russia has lost 1 million troops in war
Ukrainian forces have reportedly launched counteroffensive operations in the northeastern Sumy region, reclaiming territory and intensifying pressure on Russian troops. According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the village of Andriyivka has been liberated, and Ukrainian units have advanced near Oleksíivka, pushing Russian forces further from the Sumy border.
“Troops maintain defenses along the border and are conducting counter-offensive measures to repel the enemy,” the military stated via Facebook. This marks a strategic move following Russian advances into both the Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions, where Moscow had carved out a 200 sq km zone.
Despite the renewed fighting, peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow have quietly resumed in recent months, although both sides continue to exchange fire on the battlefield.
In a striking claim, Ukraine’s General Staff alleged that Russian military losses have now exceeded one million since the invasion began, citing over 1,000 troops killed in the past day alone. While this number remains unverified, the Center for Strategic & International Studies recently estimated around 250,000 Russian soldiers killed and nearly 950,000 wounded or incapacitated.
The ongoing conflict underscores the volatile nature of the war’s eastern front, where small territorial gains are met with fierce resistance and growing casualties.
