Air India Flight Skids Off Runway in Mumbai; 3 Tyres Burst
Air India Flight From Kochi Skids Off Runway at Mumbai Airport Amid Heavy Rain
An Air India flight arriving in Mumbai from Kochi veered off the runway on Monday morning due to intense rainfall, causing a brief disruption at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
Flight AI 2744, operated by an Airbus A320 (VT-TYA), skidded off the main runway (09/27) shortly after touchdown at 9:27 AM. Preliminary reports indicate that heavy rain led to poor visibility and slippery conditions, contributing to the runway excursion. Sources reported that three of the aircraft's tyres burst during the incident, and the engine may have sustained damage. Despite this, the aircraft was able to taxi safely to the terminal, and all passengers and crew disembarked without injury.
Air India confirmed the incident in a statement, saying:
“Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks. The safety of passengers and crew remains our top priority.”
Emergency response teams at CSMIA were quickly activated to handle the situation.
A spokesperson for the airport stated:
“An incoming aircraft from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai at 09:27 hours on 21 July 2025. CSMIA's emergency response teams were immediately activated to manage the runway excursion. All passengers and crew are safe. Minor damages were reported to the airport’s primary runway - 09/27. To ensure uninterrupted operations, the secondary runway 14/32 has been activated. Safety remains our top priority.”
Runway 09/27 is currently under inspection and repair. To minimize disruption to flight schedules, operations have been temporarily shifted to the airport’s secondary runway.
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, while maintenance teams continue repair work on the affected runway.
