Ronth: Roshan Mathew calls Shahi Kabir’s cop drama a truly memorable journey

Actor Roshan Mathew, who began his career in Malayalam cinema and later gained recognition in Bollywood with films like Darlings opposite Alia Bhatt, recently starred in the 2025 Malayalam cop drama Ronth. Now streaming on JioHotstar and OTTplay Premium, the film is directed by Shahi Kabir, a former police officer known for his deep, realistic portrayals of law enforcement, with previous writing credits including Joseph and Officer on Duty.

In an exclusive interview with OTTplay, Roshan opened up about his experience playing Dinnathan, a rookie cop navigating the complex realities of policing. “Ronth is one of the most memorable and longest journeys I’ve had,” he said. “I’ve been a part of this film right from the very beginning, and I feel like the journey still continues.”

A slow-burn police drama, Ronth explores the emotional and ethical struggles of two contrasting officers. Roshan’s character, Dinnathan, is portrayed as the more sensitive and unsure officer, offering a nuanced performance that adds depth to the film’s narrative.

Speaking about director Shahi Kabir, Roshan praised the filmmaker’s understanding of police life: “It was a great character to play. The kind of insight Shahi brings about the human side of policemen—and his potential as a filmmaker—is something I truly believe in.”

The film also stars Dileesh Pothan as the senior, hard-edged cop Yohannan. Dileesh, a celebrated filmmaker himself (Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum), brought both gravitas and subtlety to his role. “He’s a fabulous actor,” Roshan noted. “We first worked together on Moothon in 2018, and I’m just grateful to share the screen with him again.”

For fans of Malayalam cinema and compelling police dramas, Ronth delivers a grounded, thought-provoking take on duty, power, and vulnerability. Both Roshan Mathew and Dileesh Pothan’s past works, including Aanandam, Moothon, Am Ah, and Thalavan, are also available to stream on OTTplay Premium.

With powerful performances and realistic storytelling, Ronth stands as one of the must-watch Malayalam films of 2025.
