28 Years Later Scores Big With $150 Million Global Box Office

Director Danny Boyle’s long-awaited zombie sequel 28 Years Later has officially hit a major box office milestone, earning over $150 million worldwide after six weeks in theaters. The third installment in the acclaimed franchise, following 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, has clearly resonated with horror fans around the globe.

Despite no longer ranking in the domestic top 10, 28 Years Later brought in another $565,000 in North America over the weekend, alongside an additional $1 million from international markets. This brings its global total to $150 million — with $70 million coming from domestic audiences and $80 million from overseas.

Crucially, the film has now made 2.5 times its reported $60 million production budget, a strong return that could influence the franchise’s future. The financial success may give Sony the green light to move ahead with the third chapter in the new trilogy.

Director Nia DaCosta has already completed filming the next entry, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which is slated for release in January 2026. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original 28 Days Later, is expected to reprise his role in a significant way.

While Sony has not yet officially committed to a third film, the current box office performance makes that possibility far more likely. For fans of the franchise, the wait appears to have been worth it — and the infected may rise again.
